Altamont Speedway Free Festival

Held on December 6, 1969, at the Altamont Speedway raceway near Tracy, California, this free concert brought together Jefferson Airplane, Santana, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, and the Rolling Stones. Security, handled by the Hells Angels in exchange for beer, turned violent during the Stones' set, resulting in the death of spectator Meredith Hunter. The event is remembered as the dark counterpoint to Woodstock.
