Chennai Music Season

Born in 1927 with the founding of the Madras Music Academy, the Chennai Music Season, also known as the Margazhi season, runs each year from mid-November into January across the city of Chennai. Hundreds of sabhas (cultural associations) stage thousands of Carnatic music concerts (kutcheris) and classical dance performances, making it one of the largest gatherings of classical music anywhere in the world. It coincides with the Tamil month of Margazhi, whose cool weather and public holidays make it ideal for this sustained cultural whirl.
