Overview
About
The festival takes place on the Roman archaeological site of Timgad, in Batna province, Algeria, at an open-air theatre built beside the ancient ruins. Founded in 1967 as the Mediterranean festival before being renamed the festival of popular arts, it now spans dozens of editions and mixes traditional Chaoui singing with modern Algerian and Maghrebi music. Its setting among Roman ruins and its lively, engaged audience make it a landmark of Algeria's cultural calendar.
