About
Reggae Geel is held every summer in the town of Geel, Belgium, and bills itself as Europe's oldest reggae festival, born in 1978 out of a local initiative. It has grown into a gathering place for reggae fans from around the world, covering every facet of the genre from roots and dub to dancehall, and has hosted artists over the years including Burning Spear, Jimmy Cliff, Toots & The Maytals and Damian Marley. Its relaxed, non-commercial atmosphere, rounded out with workshops, food stalls and a market, is often cited by artists as among the closest to Jamaica's own spirit outside the island.
