Overview
About
The Shark Calling Festival is held on the west coast of New Ireland Province, Papua New Guinea, centered on Kontu village. It showcases the ancestral practice of "shark calling," in which fishermen lure and catch sharks by hand, rooted in a belief that sharks carry the spirits of ancestors. Created to pass this endangered tradition on to younger generations, the event combines ritual demonstrations with traditional dance and song.
