Whare Flat Folk Festival

Held every New Year since 1975 at the Waiora Scout Camp in Whare Flat, in the Silver Stream valley northwest of Dunedin, this camping festival runs entirely on volunteer effort over four days. Its definition of folk is broad, essentially any acoustic music, and includes a dedicated afternoon blues slot alongside workshops in music and dance, late-night sessions and open mic performances. With no powered sites, it keeps a rustic, self-catering character that welcomes house-trucks and campervans.
