Overview

About

The Glyndebourne Festival is a prestigious opera festival held each year between May and August on the Glyndebourne Estate in East Sussex, about an hour from London. Founded in 1934 by John Christie and his wife, the opera singer Audrey Mildmay, it opened with works by Mozart and now performs in a modern opera house opened in 1994 that seats over 1,200. Run without public subsidy, it is known for its English garden setting and its late-afternoon performances, timed so Londoners can make the round trip in a single day.
