Overview
About
This open-air opera festival takes place every summer in the Roman quarry of Sankt Margarethen, in Austria's Burgenland region, a heritage site whose stone was used to build Vienna's St. Stephen's Cathedral. Founded in 1996 as the Opernfestspiele St. Margarethen on the initiative of Marcel Prawy, it stages faithful productions of major operatic works against a dramatic backdrop of quarry rock faces. Since 2006 a children's opera and classical, pop and jazz concerts have rounded out the programme.
